Boyne Hockey on a winning streak all weekend

Front Page

The sun didn’t shine at Drogheda Grammar School on Saturday afternoon for Boyne Senior 1s season final, but the team's hard work and skills shone brightly giving them a hard-fought win against Trinity.  This win puts Boyne second in the division and earns them a league promotion.

The spirits of the large and loyal Boyne support were justifiably dampened by the persistence of soft rain, not to mention the Boyne girls being 2:0 down within the first five minutes.  Never fear though, before the stopwatch struck ten minutes, Boyne were back in it with a beautiful short corner.

By the end of the first quarter it was all square at 2:2. By half time it was 3:2 to Boyne and the third quarter was one for the records, with Boyne scoring four additional goals.

Trinity tried everything in the final quarter, including pulling their keeper to play with 11 outfielders but, while they did manage to pull two back, it wasn’t enough and gave Boyne a final winning score of 7:4. Everyone worked hard, strategically passing and defending when necessary.

Meanwhile the hockey Gods and sun were shining on the Sixth Class (team black) who travelled to Newpark to play an undefeated Avoca in the league semi-finals on Sunday afternoon. The match ended with an even draw at 1:1 pushing the young girls into a tense 1v1 playoff.

Boyne scored two quick goals leaving Avoca under pressure but their come-back left the teams even again leading to sudden death. Always an unfair end to any sporting match.

Boyne’s goalie showed no fear and managed to save the day and send the Black team into the league finals next weekend. These results are testament to the teamwork, fair play, sportsmanship and resilience of these young players.

That wonderful winning feeling.

The club also held its first u12’s blitz on Sunday, sponsored by Gerrard L McGowan Solicitors. With visiting teams from Naas, Portrane and Skerries, this was a fantastic day of fun and with some excellent playing from the young boys and girls. Crowds descended on Drogheda Grammar School to cheer on and bask in the glorious sunshine too. Congratulations all.
