Power calls for sensitive action on seaweed accumulation at Clogherhead Beach

Councillor Declan Power has expressed growing concern over the unprecedented build-up of seaweed on Clogherhead Beach which is forming natural dams and not receding with the tides.

At the July Drogheda Borough Council meeting, the Independent Councillor said that the seaweed accumulation, which is already decomposing, presents several issues including serious safety hazards due to slippery conditions, and the potential for strong odours as warmer temperatures are forecast in the coming weeks.

Recognising the ecological sensitivity of the coastal area, Cllr Power has raised the possibility of a measured and sustainable response:

“While we must respect the environmental protections in place, I believe there’s scope to consider removing a portion of the seaweed and redistributing it to the sand dunes, where it can act as a natural fertiliser. This would both manage the excessive build-up and contribute positively to dune health” he said.

“This practical solution has been suggested as a means of balancing environmental care with public safety and amenity management, particularly with the tourist season in full swing. Clogherhead Beach is a popular destination, and concerns have been raised locally about the impact on the visitor experience.”

Mark Johnson, Senior Engineer at Louth County Council, who acknowledged the complex nature of the issue, said:

“While it may sound simple to remove the seaweed, the reality is that it’s environmentally complex. Any intervention would likely require an appropriate assessment to ensure it complies with ecological protection standards.”

Cllr Power is now calling for a collaborative and assessment involving Louth County Council, environmental experts, and the local community to explore viable short-term and longer-term strategies that safeguard both the natural habitat and the needs of beach users.

“This is not about removing nature from nature. It’s about understanding our changing coastal dynamics and finding thoughtful, environmentally responsible approaches that protect our biodiversity while ensuring public safety and enjoyment.”
