Two inspiring local women’s groups enjoyed a memorable and enriching visit to Leinster House recently, experiencing first-hand the historic heart of Ireland’s national decision-making.
The Clogherhead Women’s Shed and the DAWN Ladies Group were warmly welcomed to the Oireachtas for a guided tour of the seat of Irish democracy, where they learned about the history, architecture, and the day-to-day workings of both the Dáil and the Seanad. The visit also included a unique opportunity to sit in the public gallery of the Dáil chamber, observing live debate among TDs on the motion of the day.
The day began with lunch, allowing the groups to connect and share their own community stories before embarking on the guided tour.
The visit was organised by Independent Councillor Declan Power, who said: “It was a real pleasure to organise this day out for two groups of women who do so much to strengthen their communities.

"I believe it’s important that active citizens like these have the opportunity to see where key decisions are made – to be inspired, informed, and recognised for the work they do at a local level. Leinster House is not just a place for politicians; it’s a place for the people.”
“I want to extend my sincere thanks to Garda Yvette McCormack for providing Garda Cimmunity Transport, going above and beyond to ensure a safe and comfortable journey for everyone involved. Her support helped make the day seamless and enjoyable and a special thanks to my Independent colleagues Senators Sharon Keoghan and Victor Boyhan for welcoming the two groups to the houses of the Oireachtas."
The Clogherhead Women’s Shed and the DAWN Ladies Group play active roles in promoting wellbeing, social inclusion, and community development in the Drogheda and Clogherhead area. Their visit to Leinster House served not only as a well-deserved day out but also as an inspiring reminder that community voices matter.
