The office of the President of Ireland, Michael D. Higgins, has written to the organising committee of the Saint Oliver Plunkett 400 festival to thank and congratulate them on their commemorations.

The letter reads as follows:

On behalf of President Higgins, may I convey his warmest greetings to all those involved in the commemoration of the 400th anniversary of the birth of Saint Oliver Plunkett.

This occasion offers us a valuable opportunity to reflect on the enduring legacy of man who remains a powerful symbol of faith, resilience, and reconciliation. His life, marked by courage in the face of persecution and a steadfast commitment to peace and understanding, continues to inspire generations across our island and beyond.

This year is also a special year as it marks the 5oth anniversary since Oliver Plunkett was canonised in 1975, thus becoming the first new Irish saint in almost 700 years.

On behalf of President Higgins, may I extend his best wishes to all those involved in this commemoration in honour of St Oliver Plunkett. The President commends your efforts to ensure that his legacy of peace and reconciliation is kept alive in our national consciousness.
