This morning the volunteers of Drogheda Tidy Towns installed two new sculptures by local artist Breda Marron, "The Well of Wisdom" and "Boann, Goddess of the Boyne” at the Southgate traffic roundabouts. They will create a stunning welcome to Drogheda and a gateway to the ancient Boyne Valley.

Gerry Leydon, Chairperson of Drogheda Tidy Towns, explains their significance. "Award-winning local artist Breda Marron crafted these pieces," he says. "They are more than just art. They tell captivating stories of our rich local heritage and mythology."

On the north roundabout, "The Well of Wisdom" invites exploration of the legendary Segais Well. This well is a source of sacred knowledge. Its swirling spirals and bird motifs echo the lifeblood of the River Boyne. On the south roundabout, "Boann, Goddess of the Boyne" rises majestically. Her graceful form is a symbol of the river's timeless journey and the unity of our communities. Her cloak transforms into two embracing swans. This is a powerful symbol of love, and transformation, connecting Drogheda, East Meath, and the wider Boyne Valley.

The immensely talented and award-winning Meath artist, Breda Marron, is celebrated for her thoughtful, site-specific artworks. These include Heart Space and Éirímís - Together We Rise. Her works beautifully connect with nature, folklore, and community. They profoundly enrich spaces and inspire immense local pride.

Breda said, "It has been an honour to work with Drogheda Tidy Towns to create these pieces. I have been inspired by Boann, the River Boyne, and the wealth of stories and mythology flowing through this landscape. As someone who lives here and passes by every day."

"I wanted The Well of Wisdom and Boann, Goddess of the Boyne to reflect the beauty, history, and spirit of our community."

Chief Executive, Meath County Council, Kieran Kehoe explains “Meath County Council is proud to support the installation of these exceptional new sculptures at Southgate, which now serve as a striking and symbolic gateway to Drogheda and the wider Boyne Valley. This project exemplifies the power of collaboration between local authorities, community groups and artists. We commend Drogheda Tidy Towns for their leadership and vision in delivering a public artwork that celebrates our cultural heritage, enhances the public realm and fosters a strong sense of place and local pride.”

Delivering this project was a true team and community effort. In 2022, Drogheda Tidy Towns formed a dedicated subgroup. This group led the commission. Representatives included Eamonn Clinton and Gerry Leydon from Drogheda Tidy Towns. Fiona Gilligan and Jacqui Cusack from Grangerath residents. Ciaran Leddy and Aaron O Neill from Deepforde residents. The then Cathaoirleach of Laytown & Bettystown Municipal District, Elaine McGinty, was also involved. Other members were Collette Farrell, Director of Droichead Arts Centre, and Gerardette Bailey, County Arts Officer, Meath County Council.

This monumental project is a testament to incredible community spirit and collaboration. It would not have been possible without the immense support of Meath County Council, Meath LEADER through Meath Partnership, and Community Finance Ireland, who provided crucial backing. Drogheda Tidy Towns drove the project, collaborating with local residents and generous businesses including Amazon, Coca-Cola, and The Southgate Management Company.

Breda’s artistic vision was realised through a collaborative effort. Barry McCann and Metal Made Special handled the fabrication. Eddie Phelan and VCL Consulting provided crucial engineering expertise, while Alan Lynch of A. Lynch Construction managed the vital foundation and installation work.

Gerry Leydon, Chairperson of Drogheda Tidy Towns, captured the essence of this achievement. “This project has always been about creating something special and uplifting,” he stated. “It's a meaningful focal point for Drogheda, the Boyne Valley, and our local communities here in East Meath. We hope that the sculptures inspire pride and a lasting sense of connection for generations to come. This applies to everyone living locally, visitors, businesses, and shoppers of Southgate.”

He concluded, "Come and experience these stunning new landmarks for yourself. Let The Well of Wisdom and Boann, Goddess of the Boyne inspire your daily journey. Connect to our shared heritage. Ignite a profound sense of belonging and local pride. They are more than just art. They are a vibrant new chapter in the story of Drogheda and the Boyne Valley.”
