Millmount has overlooked the town of Drogheda for hundreds of years but it has been largely overlooked itself when it comes to funding. That is about to change however.

Following on from last week’s announcement of €300,000 funding for the refurbishment of Millmount Museum, Independent Councillor Paddy Mc Quillan says that Failte Ireland have a major plan for Millmount.

“I am delighted to reveal that, after speaking with the Old Drogheda Society board of management, Failte Ireland have contacted Millmount regarding the future” he said.

“Failte Ireland have informed the Old Drogheda Society that, after visiting with their large-scale project architects, a major development vision will be created for Millmount.”

“This is great news not only for Millmount but for tourism in Drogheda. This comes on the back of alternative funding for Millmount.

“Following discussions with Louth County Council I have secured annual funding for Millmount that will see over €150K being injected over the next five years and beyond. This complements the work done by Cllr Pio Smith in securing €250K to repair the historic walls.”

“One of my pledges from the last election was to secure the future of Millmount and assist in developing it to a National Monument as part of our Destination Heritage Status.

Councillors Pio Smith and Paddy McQuillan, pictured above, worked together to secure other funding for Millmount.

“Myself and Paddy worked with the ODS and Louth County Council to secure funding to upgrade the library which is essential to safeguard the digital archive” said Councillor Smith.

President of the Old drogheda Society, John Mc Cullen thanked both Councillors. “On behalf of the Old Drogheda Society I would like to thank Pio and Paddy for their continued commitment to Millmount as we move forward” he said.

Former Mayor Cllr Mc Quillan added, “These funding streams are essential to the future of Millmount. Funding like this doesn’t just come about because one of us mentioned it at a municipal meeting, it comes about through collaboration of myself and Cllr Pio Smith working together over a very long period of time to ensure the future of Millmount museum.
