Louth County Council are delighted to announce the launch of a new library building in Dunleer. The local authority purchased the former Bank of Ireland building in Dunleer for the provision of a new library building and community space.

The current library is housed in the old railway station building in Dunleer and has seen a significant increase in membership and usage in recent years as the population of Dunleer and the mid-Louth area has grown.

Louth County Council identified that along with modern library services and improved technology, the need for a new premises for the library was essential to support this growing community and offer the best range of facilities.

The ground floor of the building has been refurbished to include a flexible, open plan, welcoming space with adult and children’s reading areas, Wi-Fi and PC access.  The new facility will support increased community engagement with more space and opportunities for school visits, story time, talks, book clubs and the many other services offered by Louth Library Service.

The refurbishment of the first  floor, which has lift access, will allow groups to meet in one of the two flexible community rooms and will provide more opportunities for library events.

Dunleer Library will also have a ‘Magic Table’ in the new facility.  This equipment is available in Dundalk, Drogheda and Ardee libraries and is a huge asset to the community.  The Magic Table promotes social connections for people living with dementia and children and adults with special needs, allowing them to play together regardless of their ability.  There will also be accessible public toilets on the ground and first floors.

As the refurbishment works are being finalised library services will continue at station house building in Dunleer ahead of the official opening of the new building in mid-October.
