Why no mention of the people who lived and worked in Fair Street?

Front Page

Plenty of former Mayors on display in The new Civic Offices but not a sign of people such as the Sisters of Charity or Dermot Kierans and Marie Clarke of the Community Services Centre.

The former editor of the Drogheda Independent, Paul Murphy, has sent in the following letter to Drogheda Life regarding the recent opening of the refurbished Civic Offices in Drogheda. He’s not happy!

Dear Editor.

I'm delighted to see that my former national school has been turned into a state of the art civic offices.

I only hope we see the appointment of a city manager for Drogheda. I am also glad to see former mayor's remembered in portraits in the new buildings.

I'm not happy to be in the role of party pooper but here goes. Why was the role of various people/groups not remembered in the new building?

So far we have heard about the wonderful architectural qualities of the old school and the transformation to the new offices. However, what about the people who lived and worked within its walls?

People such as Sisters of Charity Sr. Rosalie, Anne, Catherine, Patrick, Francis, lay teachers Ms Corey, Ms McNeill Ms Sheridan., and Ms Mc Mahon who died young, Ms O Brien who made the cauldron of cocoa every morning.

And don't forget Dermot Kierans and Marie Clarke of the Community Services Centre and of course all the orphan children of that place. A plaque in their memory would be appropriate.

If the council doesn't have the money I would put in a donation towards the cost.

Paul Murphy.
