There has been much debate in recent times, and various suggestions put forward, about what should be done with the Old Abbey Shopping Centre which is in a derelict condition and a total eyesore in the main Street of Ireland’s largest town.

It has been suggested that it should be turned into a car park but the Drogheda Cycling group says it should be turned into an indoor market and play area like the Milk Market in Limerick..

"Let’s give people a reason to visit the town centre" says Chairperson Noel Hogan. “The Drogheda Cycling Group has noted the recent debate regarding the Old Abbey Shopping Centre in town. It’s time to build something that will attract people to our town centre”.

“We believe that Drogheda should take inspiration from Limerick City and consider developing an indoor market like the hugely successful Milk Market in the mid-west capital.

“We are also calling for provision for an all-weather indoor play area to be developed in the town centre. Such a development will attract parents (who spend) with their children”.

“We are also calling for this possible development to prioritise active travel – Drogheda is already choking in traffic, we don’t need more cars clogging up our streets – we need people to be able to access the town centre easily and quickly.

“Making cycling quick and safe means more people able to take to two wheels instead of four – and that means less congestion on our roads”.
