St Oliver’s Scout Group introduces its members to a range of activites including camping, hiking and a range of adventure skills.

St Oliver’s Scout Group is celebrating its 90th anniversary this year and is extending an invitation to past members, parents and friends to a commemorative Gala dinner at the Glenside Hotel in May.

First established in May 1935, St Oliver’s Scout Group celebrates a very special birthday this year. Originally a unit of the CBSI, the Blessed Oliver 3rd Louth Scout Troop began their meetings on Fair Street, and spent many years meeting in their hall behind the Parochial Centre on Peter Street before the development of the Laurence’s Shopping Centre.

The Group developed and expanded over the years to become the 3/4/6th Louth St Oliver’s Scout Group, now a member of Scouting Ireland, welcoming boys and girls aged 6-18 years, for weekly meetings and regular activities including camping, hiking and a range of adventure skills.

The Group’s meetings take place at their den in Crushrod Avenue, where they have been resident for more than 20 years, as well as lots of activity at their campsite at Branagan’s Cross in Collon.

A number of events are planned to commemorate the momentous anniversary, including a series of group camps, and most notably a celebratory Gala Dinner which will be held at the Glenside Hotel on Saturday 10th May. Tickets are available to the public for purchase and include an arrival drink, a three course meal, late bar and live entertainment from local band ‘The Pulse’, priced at €55 per person.

The Group is extending an open invitation to the Gala to past members, parents and friends to help them to mark the occasion which will undoubtedly prove to be a fun night of celebrating past successes, and taking a trip down memory lane.

“In addition to our current leaders and members’ parents, we really hope to see lots of familiar ‘old’ faces join us for our Gala Dinner event this May” said Group Leader, Eoghan Khan.

“We’d love to welcome back those that were leaders in the past, former youth members, or parents that were involved with helping us out over the years to come and join us for a night of fun and celebration as we mark our 90th birthday this May.”

As the Group turns 90, they are also actively recruiting new members, both youth and adult. Eoghan adds, “The Group has a long standing reputation of offering a quality scouting programme to our members filled with activities and outdoors skills-based education in a fun and safe environment, and as we continue to do so, we are always open to recruiting new members – that includes young people from ages 6 upwards, to adults interested in volunteering some time to assist as leaders in our programme sections. We encourage anyone interested in joining to get in touch via our website, www.droghedascouts.com ”.

Tickets for the Gala Dinner in May are available to book online via Eventbrite.
