SDG Advocates from the 2024 course.
For many, the desire to create a more sustainable world exists —but the path to making a meaningful impact may be unclear.
The Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Advocate Training is more than just a training, it’s an opportunity to connect with like-minded people, gain hands-on experience in designing and implementing informed SDG Action Projects, and build a lasting network of advocates working together towards a better future.
The SDG Advocate Training is an immersive 7-month journey designed for 23 passionate adult and community educators, from across Ireland, who are eager to deepen their understanding of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and turn their knowledge into action.

Personal Stories of Action
Alan Byrne and Eoin O’Brien – Transforming Adult Education
For Alan Byrne, the SDG Advocate Course was a journey of self-discovery and growth. Over seven transformative months, he engaged deeply with the SDGs, broadening his critical perspective on issues like poverty, climate change, and equality. The dynamic peer-to-peer learning environment enriched his understanding and inspired him to foster respect and inclusion in his educational practice.
Alan’s collaboration with fellow advocate Eoin O’Brien resulted in the development of an innovative resource for the adult education sector. Together, they created a comprehensive website, mobile app, and tutor training course to integrate SDGs into adult and community education curricula. Their project is more than just a teaching tool—it is an educational program designed to equip tutors and staff with the skills and knowledge needed to expand learning opportunities within their communities.
Liam McGlynn – Fostering Global Citizenship in Higher Education
Liam McGlynn, an educator at Technological University Dublin (TU Dublin) – Blanchardstown Campus, has been teaching community development, human rights, and cultural diversity since 2010. With a deep commitment to social justice, Liam has worked extensively in community and local development across Ireland.
His participation in the SDG Advocate Training highlighted the interconnected nature of the SDGs and reinforced the power of experiential learning. Inspired by the training, Liam organised a webinar event on the SDGs with Third-Year Community Development and Youth Work students. The event focused on Human Rights, Peace and Justice, and Climate Action, sparking crucial discussions and promoting active engagement with the SDGs among adult learners.
A Call to Action
The application deadline is March 10, 2025, and DP encourages educators to seize this opportunity. All applicants will be invited to an online information session on April 5, 2025, from 11am to 1pm, where they can learn more about the project and hear firsthand from past participants.
Why the SDGs Matter
In 2015, world leaders from 193 countries came together to set a bold global agenda—the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These goals serve as a roadmap for tackling poverty, inequality, climate change, and other critical issues by 2030. But global change starts with local action, and that’s where educators play a crucial role.
“Educators are at the heart of change. By equipping them with the tools and resources to promote sustainability, we are fostering a culture of responsible Active Citizenship. Participants will not only gain new skills but also inspire and empower their communities to take action.” – Margaret Downey, Project Coordinator
