SIPTU-The Early Years Union has welcomed the €45 million secured in Budget 2025 to raise the pay of Early Years educators and managers, calling it a significant step in progressing the sector away from a low pay model which has resulted in a staffing crisis for services.

SIPTU Sector Organiser, Diane Jackson, said: “The Minister for Children, Roderic O'Gorman confirmed the ring-fencing of €45 million in Budget 2025 to improve rates of pay for Early Years Educators and Managers in Dáil Éireann yesterday (Wednesday, 2nd October).

“SIPTU members nationwide have been campaigning to highlight how low pay has caused a staffing crisis in the Sector. Educators are struggling financially. This crisis undermines quality services for children and parents. SIPTU activists have taken this message directly to Ministers, TDs, and Senators. Today, we see the results of their efforts."

Early Years Educator and Chair of SIPTU - The Early Years Union, Avril Green, said: “This marks progress in our fight for better pay and recognition. Low wages are pushing passionate educators out of the Sector. We're now moving in the right direction. Quality early childhood education and care benefits children's development. However, it can't be sustained with low pay for those delivering it.”

SIPTU Head of Strategic Organising, Darragh O'Connor said: “Thanks to our activists and members, the Government now sees that low pay is a big issue in Early Years. Minister Roderic O’Gorman has boosted the State’s investment in these workers. This is to be commended. Now, we urge Early Years employers to negotiate a new pay deal without delay.”

Pay rates and employment conditions are negotiated between the Early Years Union – SIPTU and the employer bodies at the Early Years Joint Labour Committee. Currently, a qualified Early Years Educator must be paid at least €13.65 per hour. This is €1.10 below the Living Wage of €14.75.
