Drogheda Councillor Ejiro O’Hare Stratton has called on the HSE to urgently establish dedicated alcohol treatment centres in Louth, highlighting the severe strain alcohol-related admissions are placing on acute hospital beds.
Speaking on the issue at the Regional Health Forum meeting yesterday, Councillor Ejiro expressed frustration at the initial response from the HSE but stressed the urgent need for local solutions.
“Alcohol misuse is a major issue in our community. Too many hospital beds are being occupied by individuals who need specialist addiction treatment, not acute hospital care. We cannot continue referring people to centres across the country when the need for services is right here at home.”
Following discussions, the HSE has indicated a willingness to work with Councillor Ejiro on addressing the issue. However, Councillor Ejiro is calling for concrete action rather than vague commitments.

“This is not just about freeing up hospital beds, it’s about providing the right care in the right place. I will continue to push for real investment in alcohol treatment services in Louth to ensure people get the support they need closer to home.”
Councillor Ejiro is urging the HSE to outline a clear plan and timeline for the development of alcohol treatment centres in the region and is calling on the government to prioritize funding for addiction services in Louth.
