Local Aontú representative Michael O’Dowd has called for immediate action to repair the street lights outside Tesco on West Street.
“Our streets must be safe, especially in this well-known area where people regularly gather” O’Dowd said.
“It is essential that this area is well-lit to deter any potential anti-social behaviour and to ensure the safety of everyone passing through.
“Many residents and visitors use this area and darkness only breeds fear and anxiety. The Gardaí, local council, and ESB must act quickly to fix these lighting issues.

“We need safe streets where people can walk without worry — not a town centre that feels abandoned at night and discourages community life and local business.
“A well-lit environment doesn’t just improve safety; it encourages businesses to thrive and fosters a real sense of belonging” he pointed out.
“I believe in encouraging people to live in our town centres — but how can we do that if those areas are left in darkness? No one wants to live where they feel unsafe after dark.
“I urge the relevant authorities to listen to these concerns and take immediate steps to ensure this area is properly lit. Every person’s safety matters, and well-lit streets are a basic yet vital part of a healthy, secure environment.”
