A science project carried out by two Transition Year students at St. Mary’s Diocesan School to harness the heat created during the composting process has won them a trip to the USA.
The project by Matthias Schazmann and Eoin O' Grainne won the Regeneron special category prize at the BT Young Scientist competition and now they are set to compete with students from all over the world.
The Regeneron award is presented to the project that demonstrates a passion for using science for good, an exceptional understanding of science concepts, perseverance and flexibility.
The St. Mary’s lads will be heading to Columbus Ohio in May to represent Ireland in the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair, the world’s largest international STEM research competition for high school students.

This all-expense-paid trip enables attendance at the European Union Contest for Young Scientists which was developed to promote the ideals of co-operation and interchange between young scientists. The contest is the annual showcase of the best of European student scientific achievement.
