Aontú candidate in Louth, Michael O'Dowd, is calling for an immediate HSE enquiry into reports that elderly people in Louth are being forced to give up their beloved pets if home carers are uncomfortable with animals in the house.
This practice, highlighted by Louth SPCA inspector Fiona Squibb, has left vulnerable individuals heartbroken. Many older people rely on their pets for companionship, emotional support, and a critical sense of security, particularly those who live alone and face daily isolation.
2For elderly individuals, pets—especially dogs—offer not only emotional comfort but also a physical sense of protection. A dog’s presence can deter intruders and provide a heightened sense of awareness and safety within the home.
“Removing this vital source of security leaves elderly people feeling vulnerable and at risk, compounding the emotional and psychological toll of losing their pets.

“This cruel and unnecessary policy strips elderly individuals of their only source of comfort, connection, and safety, exacerbating loneliness and mental health challenges.
“It undermines their dignity, autonomy, and basic human rights. The HSE must urgently investigate these practices to ensure elderly people receive care that respects their emotional, psychological, and security needs rather than creating further hardship.
If the HSE enquiry finds evidence of wrongdoing, a Garda investigation should be launched to determine whether this constitutes a breach of civil or human rights.
