A huge haul of medals for D&DAC at the National Masters Championships

Kieran McGrath of Drogheda and District AC dives for the win at the Irish Masters championships. 

 Drogheda & District AC had a fantastic day at the National Indoor Arena taking home a huge haul of medals - three golds, seven silvers and one bronze medal in a very competitive National Masters Championships.

On a day with so many outstanding performances Kieran McGrath clinched gold on the line in a thrilling finish to the 800m in 2:07:54.

Gerry O'Connor was crowned 400m Irish masters champion M60, storming home with a seasons best for the two laps 1:01:98. Shane Smyth won the O35 Category for 400m for the second year in a row. His time was 54:24.

In his debut run at the national masters, Robbie Keane took a commanding lead in the opening lap of the mixed 1500m race and dominating at the halfway stage, faced off tough competition, accelerating with 300m to go, he shot past one of them, and hung on for second place (M45) in a time of 4:28:72.

Mary Leech is firmly back on track winning a silver medal in 8:21, Andrea McCabe was second in her 400m final in 83:94, Mary Ann Kinsella took silver in her 400m category in 8:21. Mary Flanagan was second in the 60m in 12:18. Tony Corcoran was second in his 60m final in 8.65 and Frank Cruise fourth in 9.50.

Meanwhile the road runners basked in the sunshine at the Bohermeen half marathon. The course is well suited to those runners that appreciate rolling hills and conditions were tough as competitors had to run into the energy sapping wind for much of it. Despite this, Aaron Hanlon ran an awesome race finishing in 2nd place in 1:07:31.

Colin Leonard was rightfully pleased with an equally excellent performance (1:12:04). John Perkins found that he needed a few more miles in the legs but all the same did very well, finishing in 1:35:00. Also running were Michael Aylward (1:44:40), Thady Lynch (1:44:53), Karl Cooney (1:51:41) and Tomas Ahern (1:53:29)

Beatrice Cunningham did her club proud in her first All-Ireland Schools XC in Galway, finished 38th overall, a terrific run from the youngster. 

In ultra running, at the Wicklow way half marathon - IRMA race - 22Km (934m elevation) Pol O'Murchu finished in 2:24 with Eoghan O'Gorman not far behind in 2:27.

And at the spectacular Lisbon half marathon Nuala Reilly led the way completing the race in 1.52.09 with daughers Olivia finishing in 1:57:06 and Aisling in 2:07:10. Dave Cooney was the first man home for Drogheda (1:53:46), and Emmet Steenson finishing in 1:54:34.
