Louth County Council’s ‘Age Friendly Louth’ programme welcomed guests from across the county for the annual Age Friendly Expo opened by Gavin Duffy, Age Friendly Ambassador for County Louth.

Highlighting the positivity and vitality of older age, he spoke about the work of the Age Friendly programme in Louth, and emphasised the positive aspects of ageing and the significant roles older people play in our communities and families.

The expo featured a number of key speakers on topics such as positive ageing, ageism, the importance of physical activity and movement as we age and the benefits of maintaining good diet and hydration as we grow older. Presenters came from a range of agencies including the HSE, DKIT and the Louth Older People’s Council (OPC).

Age Friendly Louth hosted over 30 service providers, community groups, organizations and state agencies as exhibitors at the Expo, showcasing the services and supports they offer to older people in County Louth to enable and support people to age well.

This included exhibitors providing information and help on safety and security, community supports, finance, health and well-being, sports and leisure, recreation and technology to name but a few.

The expo was an opportunity to celebrate the contributions of older people and to promote their agency. Joe Grogan, Chairperson of the Louth Older People’s Council stated: “This is our third year having the expo in Ardee and it was wonderful to see so many older people out and about at the event getting lots of information, ideas and helpful hints and tips around ageing well.”

Age Friendly Program Manager, Sinead McVerry, said: “Because we are all unique ageing well means something different to all of us. But broadly speaking the basic building blocks of ageing well include positive attitude, the importance of social connections, hobbies and interests, regular exercise, good nutrition, contact with family, friends and neighbours and things that give you joy and fulfilment in life.”
