South Drogheda and East Meath Councillor, Stephen McKee, has welcomed Uisce Éireann’s recent announcement that it is progressing works at the Drogheda Wastewater Treatment Plant on the Marsh Road which serves the greater Drogheda area and parts of East Meath.

The works to upgrade the plant should be completed over the next 27 months and will include a new odour extraction system and new covering for the three primary settlement tanks at the plant.

“The safe and efficient operation of this Treatment Plant is an issue that I raised with Meath County Council on behalf of residents in the South Drogheda area and I am pleased that the health and safety concerns of local people are now finally being addressed by Uisce Eireann” the Fianna Fáil Councillor said.

“It is completely unacceptable for people to have to put up with persistent mal odours that have negatively impacted on their quality of life. I must thank the ‘Stop the Smell’ local lobby group who have campaigned vigorously over the past few years for action to be taken” he continued.

‘I’m told that the new covers on the primary settlement tanks will stop gases and odours entering the atmosphere and the new odour extraction system will then remove those gases from inside the PST’s.

“As all works will be delivered within the footprint of the wastewater treatment plant, Uisce Eireann say they do not anticipate significant traffic impacts in the locality though this is something that will need to be monitored closely” McKee concluded.
