Drogheda Port Company’s 2025 Drogheda Sail Training Bursary Voyages saw 26 young trainees, aged between 14 to 17, embark on transformative weeklong voyages on the beautiful 1929 gaff ketch sailing vessel ‘Maybe’.

Participants from a variety of schools and youth groups throughout Louth and Meath took to the sea under the watchful supervision of Skipper Adam Spargo and his wonderful crew. Their journeys took them as far as Scotland and the Isle of Man navigating through a full spectrum of weather conditions that tested their resilience and teamwork.

The conclusion of this year's programme in June was marked by a presentation hosted by Drogheda Port Company at Harbourville. Trainees, their families, community members, corporate sponsors and stakeholders gathered to recognise the achievements of these young sailors.

Certificates were presented by the sponsors; Collette Moss of Louth County Council, Helen Bennett of Irish Cement, Elaine Mc Kiernan of East Terminals, Tim Milner of Boskalis Irish Dredging and Shona Mc Manus on behalf of Drogheda Port Company. TD Ged Nash also attended the event and made some presentations. Directors and CEO of Sail Training Ireland were in attendance.

Shona Mc Manus spoke on behalf of the Chairman of Drogheda Port Company and emphasised the importance of such CSR initiatives in fostering the development of our young people. “This bursary scheme, now running 12 years, is made possible by the strong support of its corporate sponsors, Irish Cement, Louth County Council, East Terminal Limited, Boskalis Irish Dredging and Drogheda Port Company and we are grateful for their continued support.

“The success of the programme is a testament to the collaboration between the Port Company, Sail Training Ireland, corporate sponsors, local schools, and youth development organisations. This partnership ensures that young people from diverse backgrounds can benefit from such enriching experiences.”

These 2025 voyagers developed vital life skills, forged strong bonds, and created friendships that will last a lifetime. Their return marks the end of an incredible chapter—one filled with challenge, discovery, and personal growth.
