The Boyne German Shepherd Dog Club hosted a memorial dog show on Sunday in honour of their dear friend and local businessman, the late Jim Corcoran.

Known affectionately as the "The German Shepherd Dog Gentleman," Jim was a much-loved figure in the community and a passionate advocate for animals.

The event, held in association with Drogheda Animal Rescue (DAR) and the Louth Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (LSPCA), attracted a large number of participants and spectators, celebrating Jim's legacy and love for German Shepherds.

The day was filled with excitement as dogs and their owners competed in various events, including the highly anticipated Best in Show, a challenging Dog Agility Course, and a disciplined Obedience Show. The friendly competition brought together dog lovers from across the region, all eager to showcase their canine companions’ talents.

In addition to the competitions, the event featured a range of activities - a food truck ensured that everyone was well-fed, while raffle prizes added an element of fun and excitement. Educational booths, hosted by local animal welfare organisations, DAR, and LSPCA, provided valuable information on animal care and welfare.

Several notable figures attended the event, including the Cathaoirleach of Louth County Council, Kevin Callan, who praised the community's efforts in supporting local animal welfare causes.

"Today's memorial dog show is a beautiful tribute to Jim Corcoran, a man who embodied compassion and dedication to the welfare of animals” Cllr. Callan said.

“Jim's love for German Shepherds and his commitment to our community will be remembered through events like this, where we come together not just to celebrate our pets, but also to support the incredible work of organisations like DAR and LSPCA. It's an honour to be here today, witnessing the community's strong support for a cause that was so close to Jim's heart."

Brian McCann from Newgrange Falconry who showcased a stunning collection of birds of prey, said: "Being here today in memory of Jim Corcoran, a true animal lover, reminds us all of the importance of protecting every creature that shares our world.

“At Newgrange Falconry, our mission is to educate both adults and children on the vital need for conservation of our birds of prey. These magnificent birds face serious threats, from the loss of their natural habitats to the dangers of poisons being carelessly used in the environment.

“Jim understood the delicate balance of nature, and it is through education and awareness that we can honour his legacy by ensuring these incredible birds thrive for generations to come."

Trainer and owner of the Boyne German Shepherd Dog Club, Hugh Rooney, said: “We are overwhelmed by the community’s support and the love shown for Jim. Hosting this memorial dog show in honour of Jim, is a deeply meaningful way for us to celebrate his life and his love for these incredible dogs.

“Jim was not just a dear friend but also an inspiring figure in our community, whose passion for German Shepherds and all animals touched so many of us. Today's event reflects the spirit of camaraderie and dedication that Jim embodied.

“It is a privilege to continue his legacy, bringing together dog lovers to support the causes he cared about so deeply. We’re grateful to everyone who participated and helped make this day a success.”

Fiona Squibb from LSPCA, and Fiona Lee-Gargan from DAR, were on hand to share their expertise and engage with the public. Proceeds from the event will be donated to DAR and LSPCA, two organisations dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming animals in need. The funds raised will help these charities continue their critical work.

The success of the memorial dog show is a testament to the strong community spirit in Drogheda and the surrounding areas. The Boyne German Shepherd Dog Club extends its heartfelt thanks to all who participated, volunteered, and attended the event, ensuring Jim Corcoran's legacy as a true friend of animals lives on.
