Pound marks World Animal Day with rehoming appeal for blind dog ‘Gentle Jake’

Gentle Jake, a blind dog currently in the Louth County Council dog pound, needs a new home.

Louth County Council Dog Pound is marking World Animal Day 2024 with a special appeal on behalf of a blind dog currently in need of a new home.

Having been surrendered to the Dog Pound in September along with three of his family members, ‘Gentle Jake’ was the first to find a new home. Sadly, when he was taken for a vet visit by his new owners, it transpired that he was, in fact, blind.

Catherine Keating, Pound Keeper at Louth County Council Dog Pound, explained: “It was little wonder that he was so utterly confused by the strange smells and noisy kennel environment, with frequent comings-and-goings of unknown people and dogs.

"His new owner’s circumstances are simply not suited to a blind dog, and he did not feel safe enough to relax in the home despite their best efforts. With great sadness, he was returned into our care this week.”

The young male Collie, who will be familiar to followers of the Dog Pound’s popular Facebook page has remained friendly throughout, and has grown in confidence daily, enjoying lots of fun and playtime with other dogs in the new enrichment area.

“He is more than ready to find his forever home – one with a friendly dog to teach him the ropes, and with people who will take the time to let him settle and learn where everything is. If you have a fairly large, completely secure garden, a calm and peaceful adult-only home environment, patience, and kindness in abundance, please consider opening your heart to allow Jake to see you with his,” said Catherine Keating.

World Animal Day is an annual international event, held on October 4th, which celebrates the unique bond between humans and animals and highlights the importance of animal welfare.

Louth County Council Dog Pound is committed to the welfare of animals, and as one of the busiest local authority pounds in the country, are proud to have rehomed 96% of dogs surrendered in 2023.
