A father and son finish the Drogheda Easter 5k together.

There was a fantastic turnout for the Drogheda Easter 5km which took place on Easter Monday to raise funds for the Moneymore Townland Community Hub.

This was the first running race to take place on the Port Access Northern Cross Route (PANCR) and it drew something in the region of 550 runners, joggers and walkers of all abilities. It was heart warming to see fathers and sons, friends old and new all running together.

The atmosphere was electric before the start which was at Moneymore Childcare Centre where the Loving Life Choir were in good voice as they made a return to its roots as, for the first time since its formation, the Choir performed in the community it proudly hails from.

It was an emotional day for the choir and founder Ken OHeligh, who was very moved, said: “A heartfelt thank you goes out to our passionate members and the incredible parents who bring energy, heart, and unwavering support to every performance.

The Loving Life Choir

“Despite a busy season filled with rehearsals and drama workshops in preparation for their upcoming anti-bullying film this May, the Loving Life Choir remains committed to creating positive change.

“A heartfelt thank you goes out to our passionate members and the incredible parents who bring energy, heart, and unwavering support to every performance.”

It wasn't all serious running, dogs still had to be walked!

Ken’s words more or less summed up the significance of the event which was all about creating positive change in an area that has endured more than its share of problems.

Colin Dyas crosses the line in first place.

Colin Dyas of Drogheda and District AC was the first man across the line having covered the 5 kilometres in a fantastic time of 16 minutes and 49 seconds and Leah Sheerin was the first woman home in 18 minutes 48, but really there were no winners or losers.

This event was more about celebrating community and friendship and supporting each other in the common aim of raising funds for the new Community Hub which will make a huge difference to local organisations who have been carrying out vital work in very cramped conditions for far too long.

Congratulations are due to the small army of people behind the scenes who made this and many other events happen. Congratulations and thanks are due also to Murray and Sons Coaches who were the main sponsors.

The first juvenile across the line was Patrick Duffy.
